How to keep your business from failing

September 13, 2022 · Angela Cruz

Most ventures get off to a bad start, and not because the business owner lacks drive or good ideas, but because they overlook a number of things they should keep in mind before jumping into the great adventure of opening a business.

It's common to see a venture disappear from the market after two or three years, or even sooner. Nacho Muñoz, an expert in mindset and online entrepreneurship, said a while back that 95% of entrepreneurs don't have the right mindset to build a business.

What mindset should you have? Where are you falling short? It's important to define this so you can be part of that percentage that actually manages to keep their venture running with sustainable productivity. Since you're going to invest so much in an idea you know will benefit consumers, it's wise to address your weak points right away.

A great many entrepreneurs have excellent business ideas and never work up the nerve to launch their project because of fear of failure. Fear shuts out many opportunities to generate income and create jobs.

The first thing you must do to keep your business from failing is to get rid of fear. Yes, I know it's natural to feel afraid of starting something new, but if you go about it the right way, guided by responsible, professional people, you'll manage to push that fear aside.

The second thing is to understand that there are two types of mindset: the fixed mindset and the open, or growth, mindset. The mindset that will guarantee your business's success has to be the open one — the one that bets on growth, the one that doesn't get stuck on old assumptions but knows how to make decisions under pressure. You need to avoid freezing up and have confidence in yourself.

The third is to have a business plan. You need to keep in mind the key details for building your business (value proposition, target population), acquire quality products, and have financial backing. You must know the market you're getting into.

The fourth thing to keep in mind is that you can't throw yourself into the sea of entrepreneurship alone. Many people believe they can handle everything by themselves, with no partners, no advice, no specialized mentorship. You need to surround yourself with people who share your interests and who can motivate and support you, both morally and financially.

Your business fails when you build it with weakness, without a strategy, without a plan, with fear, and in isolation. Facing that adventure alone can leave you adrift. The sea of entrepreneurship has very high waves that, without a strong mindset, can wreck your boat (your business) and leave you completely shipwrecked.

You don't have to start that search on your own. Find good mentors and share your concerns with people who have already made it. That's the best way to reach your goal and not die trying.
