Balance: the key to your success

February 17, 2023 · Angela Cruz

Having a balance between work and personal life (family, friends, partner) is vital, and this balance is often very difficult to maintain, given the turbulent, hectic world we live in.

Overworking, rather than being a sign of power, is actually a sign of weakness. As an employee or the head of a company, subjecting yourself to that many working hours undermines your health.

Some people think that working more and sacrificing quality of life and well-being will make them more successful. But the truth is that a professional's success lies in balance — in knowing how to coordinate daily routines and enjoy stability, not only financial but emotional as well.

When you devote long hours to work without leaving room for leisure, rest, and enjoyment with family, you can fall into a spiral of anxiety that can lead to stress, exhaustion, depression, or even serious physical illness.

On the other hand, devoting more time to personal and family life than to work can also have negative consequences, such as a lack of focus on work tasks and reduced productivity.

52% of workers in the United States reportedly suffer from burnout, according to findings from Indeed, the job search platform.

This is truly alarming and comes with very high costs to the population's health. Moreover, according to Gallup (the American analytics and consulting firm), the effects of this exhaustion make employees 63% more likely to call in sick, nearly 3 times more likely to quit, and 13% less confident in their performance.

That's why balance is the word that should govern your daily life. Balance speaks of health, of peace, of order, and of stability. You need balance in every aspect of your life. To help you get there, here are 3 tips:

  • Avoid redundant work and create a daily work plan with clear, achievable goals.
  • Whether you're at work or at home, delegate tasks to your team or support network.
  • Understand that things don't always go according to plan — don't punish yourself, be flexible.

You need a balance between your personal space and your work life. Yes, work — I champion professional growth and the pursuit of success — but if you don't have peace at home, harmony, and good relationships with your loved ones, you'll be failing as an entrepreneurial leader.

Take time to have fun with your family, read under a blanket with a warm cup of tea in your hands, play with your children, get away for a weekend to the mountains or the beach. Relax, reconnect with yourself — the time invested in strengthening family and romantic bonds will give you the energy to keep growing professionally.
