The 3 best types of leaders

January 26, 2023 · Angela Cruz

Know them, take a little from each one, and apply them according to your work context.

There are many leadership styles, and they can carry your organization toward success or failure in terms of its business goals.

It matters that you can identify what kind of leader you are, and what you need to strengthen in service of your mission as a brand, a service, or a product.

Personality determines how we behave and how we take on challenges. Leaders are no exception. To bring a venture or a business safely through, you need a leadership personality free of selfishness, authoritarianism, and coldness.

Leadership should be a process of social influence that maximizes the efforts of others — the team in your care — in order to reach shared objectives.

Before I get to the top three, let me show you the kind of leader you should not be: the coercive leader.

The coercive leader. An authoritarian style with almost no resonance, and one that damages motivation. Every decision falls on this leader and power is centered in them; the members of the team have one function only — to obey.

Now, if you want to take your company or venture to a more productive level, absorb something from each of the three types of leaders below and, from them, shape your own leadership personality.

The 3 best types of leaders

The visionary leader. This is the leader who injects the team with a concrete vision built on expansion and growth. They generate commitment and loyalty, and they mobilize the organization toward its objectives progressively, guiding both the company and its people toward the goals that have been set. They see development and success even when the outlook looks gray.

The developing leader. This is the coach. They manage the completion of tasks through the lens of training and development. They empower their team with coaching techniques that promote continuous improvement. This style keeps everyone working in the same direction and cultivates values such as trust, respect, and admiration.

The exemplary leader. This is the leader who sets the course and takes responsibility for how the team gets there. They work alongside their people so they can see their entrepreneurial spirit and their skills firsthand, teaching the values of the organization through action. They always work to create a good environment. This is a proactive leader who energizes people and invites participation.

No single type or style of leader works in every situation you will face at work. You need to recognize the moment for each of these three, and use them wisely. It is also worth remembering that leadership skills can be trained and developed. Training in this area is essential to turning your company's vision and mission into a goal that is reachable and that bears fruit.
